The 82nd winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 16th September 1857 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Imperieuse, a bay filly by Orlando out of Eulogy, owned by Mr John Scott. A field of 11 runners contested the race, although there were 158 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 3950 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £3,675. It was widely expected that Blick Bonny would follow up her Derby win quite comfortably, although she was odds against. In the event she only managed fourth place behind Imperieuse, the 2 length winner, who beat Commotion in 3 minutes 25 seconds, while Tournament was a further neck away in third.
